MEET THE KEYNOTE: CHARLES LANDRY

Charles Landry is a respected Louisiana attorney and civic leader whose work has helped shape the growth, development, and long-term vision of Baton Rouge.

A leading land use and real estate attorney at Fishman Haygood LLP, Charles has spent his career working at the intersection of law, development, planning, and public-private partnership. His practice focuses on real estate development, real estate finance, land use, and zoning, and he has represented clients in a wide range of major projects, including residential developments, office buildings, shopping centers, hotels, medical facilities, golf course communities, industrial developments, and Traditional Neighborhood Developments.

Beyond his legal practice, Charles has played a significant role in advancing smart growth and community planning across the Capital Region. He was a founding member of the East Baton Rouge Zoning Advisory Committee and served as its chair from its formation in 2003 through 2017. He has also helped guide major public-private projects and advised nonprofit organizations on mission, structure, and governance.

Charles has been deeply involved in efforts to grow Baton Rouge’s high-tech, research, information, and entrepreneurial sectors. He was instrumental in the formation of the Louisiana Technology Park and continues to serve as general counsel to the Research Park Corporation. He also serves on the Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s Governance Committee and previously served as vice chair of the LSU University Lakes Restoration Committee.

In 2020, Charles received the Marcia Kaplan Kantrow Baton Rouge Visionary Award from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation for his leadership in helping implement the master plan for downtown Baton Rouge. His work has been central to several major downtown projects, including the consolidation of state offices into state-owned buildings on North Street, the expansion of downtown hotels beginning with the Capital House Hotel, and the development of the Arts Block, anchored by the Shaw Center for the Arts. His efforts helped lay the groundwork for the restaurants, apartments, cultural spaces, and new investment that followed.

Charles was named the 2006 Businessperson of the Year by the Baton Rouge Business Report and Junior Achievement, the first attorney to receive the award. He also received the 2002 Distinguished Leadership Award for a Citizen Planner from the Louisiana Chapter of the American Planning Association, recognizing his leadership in community and regional planning and his work to improve quality of life across Louisiana.

A frequent lecturer at LSU’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center and continuing education seminars, Charles has shared his experience on topics including land use planning, complex real estate transactions, title examination, secured transactions, and real estate workouts. He is also co-editor of *The Foreign Investor’s Guide to the Legal Aspects of Doing Business in Louisiana*, a resource for parties seeking to invest in the state.
